Building Department

Residential Requirements

All contractors and sub-contractors on residential projects must be licensed by the City of Troy.  Additionally, if the contract amount is $10,000.00 or more, the main general contractor must be licensed with the State of Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board located at 445 Herron Street, Montgomery, AL 36130; (334) 242–2230.

A City of Troy Business License may be obtained online here or from the City Hall, Inspection Department located at 301 Charles W Meeks Ave.  (334) 670–6008.

New Homes: Permit is required.  Requires a printed and digital set of construction plans to be approved with site plan showing required setbacks.  Review time is generally seven (7) days. Digital copy may be emailed to rachel.davis@troyal.gov.

Permit fees are .0025 of the estimated contract amount plus $5.00.

Additions: Permit is required.  Site and constructions plans must be submitted and approved before permit is issued.

Accessory Structures: Permit is required after approval from Building Official.  This includes but is not limited to: detached garages, carports, storage building, green houses, etc.

Mobile Homes: Permit is required.  Board of Adjustment approval is required before issuance of a permit for a location outside of a mobile home park.

Swimming Pools: Permit is required.

No work shall be done to any part of a building beyond the point required for each inspection.  It is the responsibility of the contractor to call for all required inspections (foundation, rough-in, final).

Commercial Requirements

Commercial Contractors with contracts exceeding $50,000.00 must be licensed as a State General Contractor and as a licensed contractor with the City of Troy.

The State of Alabama General Contractors Licensing Board is located at 2525 Fairlane Drive, Montgomery AL. 36116; (334) 272-5030.

A City of Troy Business License may be obtained online here or at City Hall, located at 301 Charles W Meeks Ave; (334) 670–6008.  Office hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 till 12:00 and 1:00 till 5:00 P.M.

New Construction: All new construction or additions must be approved by the Building Official prior to issuing the permit.  One (1) complete set of printed plans and one (1) set of digital plans stamped by an architect or engineer licensed by the State of Alabama have to be submitted to the Building Department for approval. You may email the digital set of plans to Rachel.davis@troyal.gov.  Review time is generally 15 to 20 working days.

Construction Alterations: One hard copy and one digital PDF copy of plans showing floor plan and proposed alterations are required to be sent to chuck.ingram@troyal.gov and rachel.davis@troyal.gov. Plans may be required to be stamped by a licensed architect or engineer, as required by the code.

To request an inspection, contact (334) 670–6008, or 670–6010 with the address and permit number.  Request for an inspection requires a 4 hour notice.
