Monday garbage pickups are scheduled for Wednesday, May 29th.

Pike Area Transit Systems (PATS) will not be running routes on Monday, but will resume on Tuesday May 28th.

Readers age 6-11 will explore all things underground this summer as Troy Public Library presents “Dig into Reading.” Children’s activities include programs on dinosaur fossils, animals, pirate treasure, and more; while young adults will solve mysteries, tour a historical cemetery, and attempt to pull off a grand heist. Reeves proclaimed November 15, 2012 as Troy Recycles Day, which coincides with America Recycles Day and Alabama Recycles Day. The proclamation urges all citizens of Troy to promote recycling as an environmentally efficient and economically smart habit which fosters the health, safety and economic vitality of our community.

 “Our recycling program has been in existence since 1991, and we want to do what we can to enhance our current recycling efforts,” said Public Works Director Vaughn Daniels.The Alabama Department of Environmental Management awarded the city of Troy almost $300,000 as part of the Alabama Recycling Fund Grants program.

The Alabama Recycling Fund is part of the Solid Wastes and Recyclable Materials Management Act signed into law by Gov. Bob Riley in 2008. The grants are funded through a $1-per-ton fee imposed on solid wastes discarded in Alabama landfills, which was enacted under the same law.

Mayor Reeves issued Executive Order 2012-001, establishing a Task Force for a Sustainable Troy. This task force will recommend goals that will enable Troy to become a leader in environmental quality and livability in the United States. “There is not a community in Alabama that benefits more economically from recycling than Troy. There are thousands of jobs that have been created directly and indirectly from recycling. The dollars spent in this community from those payrolls have a tremendous impact on the local economy that filters through to almost every citizen,” said Mayor Jason A. Reeves.

As part of the Executive Order, Mayor Reeves directed every city department to have onsite recycling bins by January 1, 2013. In addition, every citizen will have access to recycling at city sponsored events.
